From the Ground Up
After more than 30 years inside, the simplest things carry enormous weight. The taste of a real meal. The feeling of open land. The sound of the world going about its day without walls or schedules imposed by others. Dusty is experiencing all of it and approaching every moment with the same discipline and intentionality from his SEAL training that carried him through his incarceration.
He is focused on reconnecting with family, rebuilding his health, relearning the rhythms of everyday life, and laying the groundwork for the advocacy work ahead. It is not easy. But Dusty has never been someone who looks for easy.

Family & Reconnection
After decades apart, rebuilding relationships with family is Dusty's most immediate and deeply personal priority. He is taking that time with gratitude and care.

Health & Strength
A SEAL to his core, Dusty is focused on physical and mental rebuilding; that includes reconnecting with nature, movement, and the disciplines that have always grounded him.

Writing & Storytelling
Dusty has been writing for years behind bars. He is now channeling that voice outwardly through articles, public speaking, and soon to come, a book he has been working on.

Legal Fight for Exoneration
Parole is not justice. Dusty is working with legal advocates to pursue full exoneration and the removal of two wrongful convictions from his record.

Justice Reform & Advocacy
From Mending Fences to Veteran Support Groups, Dusty built community inside prison walls. That instinct does not stop at the gate. He will be working with Veterans Healing Veterans in a full-time role beginning in August 2026

Community & Purpose
Dusty's experience is unique. He intends to leverage his platform to advocate for systemic reform so others do not spend untold years paying for crimes they did not commit.

One of the most profound aspects of Dusty's freedom has been rediscovering the natural world. Waterfalls. Open sky. Long drives with no destination. These are not small things, they are everything after 30 years without them.
Dusty grew up with a deep love of the outdoors, and that love never left him. He spent years studying horticulture and ecology from behind prison walls. Now he is walking through it all in person, with his mother by his side, and with a sense of wonder that is impossible to fake.

There are moments in Dusty's days now that are simply quiet. No counts. No rules about when to sit or stand or eat. Just time — the one thing that was taken from him for three decades, now given back.
He is using that time wisely. Reading. Writing. Thinking carefully about what comes next. Dusty has always been someone who takes the long view. Even in his darkest years, he was planning, building, leading. Freedom has only sharpened that.
He has ideas for a book. Ideas for a movement. A lifetime of clarity about what justice should look like and what it looks like when the system gets it catastrophically wrong. Watch this space.
