Dusty’s Work with Veterans Healing Veterans From The Inside Out
From August 1, 2026, Dusty has started work with Veterans Healing Veterans From the Inside Out (VHV). VHV is a trauma recovery and suicide prevention program for VETERANS who are incarcerated. It reduces stress and heal wounds caused by ptsd through its peer to peer mentorship program.
On August 1, 2026, Dusty marked his first day at work by dedicating his time to both public service and advocacy. Stationed on his hand-painted kayak at the annual Cove party on Lake Monroe, Indiana, Dusty served on standby as a volunteer lifeguard, ready to provide life-saving assistance to anyone in need.
At the same time, he used the opportunity to raise awareness about the mission of Veterans Healing Veterans from the Inside Out.
His presence reflects the values that have come to define his journey: resilience, service, and a commitment to giving back to others despite the extraordinary hardships he has endured.

Dusty’s Prior Work with Veterans Healing Veterans From The Inside Out
During his incarceration at Greensville Correctional Center, Dusty developed the Veterans Therapeutic Horticulture Program, an innovative rehabilitative initiative designed specifically for incarcerated military veterans. The program combines evidence-based principles of horticulture with therapeutic practices to promote healing, self-reflection, personal responsibility, and long-term personal growth among justice-involved veterans.
Drawing on years of experience managing and teaching greenhouse operations within the correctional setting, Dusty recognized that the process of cultivating plants mirrors the journey of personal transformation. Just as neglected plants can thrive with patience, care, and the right environment, so too can individuals who are given meaningful opportunities for healing, purpose, and growth. This philosophy became the foundation of the Veterans Therapeutic Horticulture Program.
Originally piloted at Soledad State Prison in California, the program was later adopted by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, becoming the nation's first therapeutic horticulture program specifically designed for incarcerated veterans. Through hands-on horticultural training, peer mentorship, and therapeutic engagement with nature, the program seeks to foster resilience, emotional well-being, teamwork, and renewed purpose while preparing participants for successful reintegration into their communities.
Dusty’s Prior Work with Veterans in Prison
Dusty’s life has always been defined by a deep spirit of patriotism and a drive to make a positive impact, qualities that led him to serve his country as a Navy SEAL team member. During the time he was incarcerated, Dusty has shown resilience, humility, and an unshakable commitment to bettering himself and the lives of those around him.
At Pocahontas State Correctional Center, Dusty became President of the Veteran’s Support Group and helped lead efforts to build morale and community among incarcerated veterans.
In this role, he captained and participated in the 2024 Warrior Games, a multi-sport competition designed to raise money for the Gary Sinise Foundation, which supports veterans and first responders. He was recognized with the Commander’s Award for his leadership and gave the keynote speech at the closing ceremony, where he reflected on his military journey and the inner strength that has sustained him throughout his incarceration.
